“I’m Crying Maria” is a song inspired by an EarthBound fan comic and how it depicts the villain Giygas’ eventual emotional breakdown into that thing I fought at the end of the game. One of the lines used in the comic was “I’m crying Maria” as a sign of the villain unable to cope with the pure emotion flowing through him (he suppresses emotion in order to conquer worlds, according to the first game in the series), thus causing his body to fall apart and “fall asleep forever” as he becomes the amorphous pained entity floating somewhere in the distant past and most likely turning your TV into shit.
