about

"Sometimes, the Parrot is My Only Friend” started off (and was written) as a song about the oft-discordant relationship my elder sister and my grandparents have. Arguing over stuff that should be solved with simple mediation and compromises, they fill the house with arguments abound. At the time I wrote this, it was Christmastime and they were at their worst – my sis had failed most of her coursework in her first semester off at college and my grandfather didn’t want to have to deal with her decision to eventually transition into a male. The more I read this song, the more I realized, “this isn’t just about Brittany.” I had been linked some Yahoo Answers rants made by some little-known guy by the name of Jon Jafari who talked about how his parents emotionally abused him due to their constant fighting – and how he would go up at odds against them. Keep in mind that I was primarily writing about Brittany and her relationship with our grandparents. This didn’t occur to me during the actual process of piecing the song together. Eventually, I just titled the song into what it’s known as today.

lyrics

This isn’t what I was expecting
Again at each other’s’ throats
Right when I should be hearing
Mannheim Steamroller songs

Just tell me what to say,
So I won’t drive my folks away
What do I do, what do I do?
Please don’t let this suck

Shut the fuck up, everybody
Let me get my rest
Oh please
Oh please

This isn’t what I wanted from life
To be entangled in all of this
Up at each other’s throats
Just when the calm could be clear

I don’t want to start this again
But seriously just please let go
And don’t tell me you’re sorry
You’ll do it again

This stigma is what I want to get rid
This stigma is keeping me down

Will you ever shut up
Will you ever make up
Will you ever achieve peace
Before I die
